Motion Detection On Your Amazon Echo Device

James W · August 1, 2025 ·

Bottom Line Up Front: Starting in late 2021, Amazon enabled ultrasound motion detection on 4th-generation Echo and Echo Dot speakers. These devices emit inaudible sound waves that bounce off nearby objects to determine if someone is present in the room.

If you’ve activated Occupancy Routines, your device is likely using this feature now—even if you didn’t realize it.

Why It Matters

  • Your Echo isn’t just hearing what you say—it’s watching where you are through motion data.
  • This turns a passive speaker into a presence-aware surveillance device, especially in shared households or workspaces.
  • Threat actors don’t need access to your microphone if your device logs presence patterns, timing, and routines.
  • Location + behavior metadata is gold for profiling, targeting, and even physical intrusion planning.

Which Devices Use This?

According to Amazon, motion detection via ultrasound is available on:

  • Echo Dot (4th Gen and newer)
  • Echo (4th Gen and newer)

No other Echo generations currently support this feature—but future devices likely will by default.

How to Disable Motion Detection on Your Amazon Echo

  1. Open the Alexa app on your phone
  2. Tap Devices (bottom menu)
  3. Choose Echo & Alexa, then select your specific device
  4. Tap the gear icon (top right) to open settings
  5. Scroll down to Motion Detection
  6. Tap the toggle to turn the feature Off

Note: Some occupancy routines may re-enable motion detection after updates or voice-based activation. Recheck this setting periodically.

What Amazon Says

Amazon states that:

  • Ultrasound motion detection is off by default and only enabled when you activate certain features
  • Audio remains inaudible to humans
  • Presence detection data is stored and processed according to Alexa’s standard privacy policies (which you can review here)

Still, many users enable features without knowing they’re turning on a new form of tracking.
